With a fine mix of museums, shops and ancient architecture, this Flemish city has something for everyone. Ghent is often overshadowed by Bruges and Antwerp, but it actually combines some of the best elements from both its neighbours – with more historic sites than Antwerp, and better eating and drinking options than Bruges. The city's medieval core is cradled within a loop of the River Leie, which surrounds the old town like a moat. To the north is Patershol, which contains many of Ghent's best restaurants. To the east, around Brabantdam are found some stylish bars and cafés. The best views across the city are from the battlements of

Gravensteen at Sint-Veerleplein. This castle now houses a museum, chronicling its checkered past, and a gruesome torture chamber. The Museum voor Schone Kunsten is one of Belgium's best art galleries, with a fine array of Flemish Masters. Housed in a palatial neoclassical building on the edge of the leafy Citadelpark it is the perfect place to while away a few contemplative hours and is also the location for Ghent's Sunday morning flower market. As well as all the flowers, there are brass bands playing in an ornate grandstand. Don't leave Ghent without walking along the river (on both sides) – great for photo opportunities and places to eat; the banks are crammed with restaurants and most of them offer outdoor riverside dining.
