You will fall in love at first sight with the pretty city of Ypres. Visit the Menin Gate Memorial which commemorates those soldiers of the British Commonwealth who fell in the Ypres Salient during the First World War and who have no known grave. Every evening at precisely eight o'clock, traffic around its imposing arches is stopped while the Last Post is sounded beneath the Gate by the local fire brigade. The Passchendaele Memorial Museum and Tyne Cot Cemetery should not be missed and visits to the trenches are particular poignant.

Visit Saint Martin's Cathedral and 'In Flanders Field Museum', which will provide a vivid account of the Great War. Emerge straight into the Grote Market and enjoy dinner at one of the cafe restaurants that serve up delicious Flemish food. Sit by a window or out on the terrace in summer to fully enjoy the beauty of the stunning square. Walk along the ramparts, from the 17th century Belle Gate to the Menin Gate in the east of the city. After a visiting the battlefields take a 3km detour out of the city to the exotic Bellewaerde Park with its variety of unique attractions. You can enjoy breathtaking rides, the animal park with flamingos, dwarf goats and even lions and a water park with waterfall rides, rapids and boat trips through the jungle.
